Weekly Marketing Update

Last updated: 10 August 2026

Current coverage: 3rd August 2026 – 9th August 2026

Reading time: 14 minutes

Digital marketing developments continue to centre around AI search, automation and paid media.

This week, Microsoft Clarity introduced more detailed AI citation reporting, Google confirmed upcoming Smart Bidding and AI Max changes, and new research highlighted the growing role of advertising within ChatGPT. These developments follow last week’s updates around AI citations, AI-generated content, WordPress 7.1 and Google’s wider shift towards AI-led advertising.

Here are the developments that matter, their potential impact on your marketing and where action may be needed.

3rd August 2026 – 9th August 2026

AI measurement and paid-search automation led this week’s developments, with several Google Ads changes carrying clear August and September action dates.

Microsoft Clarity Adds Branded and Non-Branded AI Citation Reporting

Microsoft Clarity can now separate AI citations triggered by branded searches from those generated by broader, non-branded topics.

Its AI Citations dashboard now includes branded and non-branded labels, filters, citation counts and separate Share of Authority reporting.

The distinction matters. Branded citations reflect existing recognition, while non-branded citations can show whether your expertise is appearing before a potential customer already knows your business.

However, citations alone do not equal traffic, enquiries or revenue.

What should your business do?

  • Separate branded and non-branded AI citations
  • Review which wider topics generate visibility
  • Compare Share of Authority across important subjects
  • Track AI referral traffic separately
  • Connect AI visits with leads and conversions

Loop Digital’s Answer Engine Optimisation services can help connect AI visibility with wider SEO, content and conversion performance.

Google Smart Bidding Changes Take Effect From 17 August

Budget-limited campaigns using Target CPA or Target ROAS may behave differently from 17 August.

Google will place greater weight on the bidding target set by the advertiser, even when a campaign is limited by budget. This means campaigns currently outperforming their target could begin moving closer to it.

The key question is whether your current target still reflects the result your business actually wants.

What should advertisers do?

Before 17 August:

  • Find campaigns marked Limited by budget
  • Compare actual CPA or ROAS with the target
  • Review significant gaps between target and performance
  • Adjust targets where commercial goals have changed
  • Monitor performance after the update

Loop Digital’s paid search and PPC services focus on lead quality, acquisition costs and measurable return rather than traffic alone.

Google Will Auto-Upgrade Eligible Search Campaigns to AI Max

From 1 September, eligible Search campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match will begin moving automatically to AI Max.

Automatically Created Asset campaigns will gain search-term matching and text customisation, while campaign-level broad match will move to AI Max search-term matching.

This is separate from the wider Dynamic Search Ads migration, which has been delayed until February 2027.

What should advertisers do?

  • Identify affected campaigns before 1 September
  • Benchmark CPA, ROAS, conversions and lead quality
  • Review Automatically Created Asset settings
  • Check search terms after migration
  • Monitor text customisation and landing-page matching
  • Compare results against pre-migration performance

ChatGPT Ads Now Appear in Around a Quarter of Responses

ChatGPT advertising is moving beyond a small-scale experiment. Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape Report found that 26% of ChatGPT responses contained ads.

Unlike traditional paid search, ChatGPT can use conversational context and intent to determine ad relevance. This could create new opportunities during research and comparison journeys, but the channel is still developing.

What should advertisers do?

  • Treat ChatGPT Ads as an emerging channel
  • Consider whether your audience uses AI during buying research
  • Use clear, benefit-led messaging
  • Direct users to relevant landing pages
  • Measure clicks and conversions before increasing investment

Google Tests Homepage Shortcuts Into AI Mode

Google is testing new homepage shortcuts designed to drive more users into AI Mode. The desktop test adds Create images, Ask about files and Brainstorm beneath the search box, each linking directly to an AI-powered experience.

It is only a limited test, but it reinforces Google’s wider push towards AI-led search.

What should your business do?

No immediate strategy change is needed.

Instead:

  • Monitor AI-led search behaviour
  • Track changes in organic and AI referral traffic
  • Build content around complete customer questions
  • Make products, services and expertise easy for AI systems to understand

Loop Digital’s Generative Engine Optimisation services focus on improving how brands are understood, cited and represented across generative search.

Gen Z Consideration of Claude and OpenAI Rises as AI Trust Lags

AI platforms are increasingly behaving like consumer brands, but awareness is growing faster than trust.

YouGov data showed strong Q2 2026 increases in consideration among US Gen Z adults for Claude, OpenAI and ChatGPT.

Yet separate research found only 28% of Americans trusted AI assistants for answers, significantly below traditional search engines. Hence, visibility does not automatically create trust.

What should your business do?

  • Treat AI visibility and trust as separate goals
  • Support claims with clear evidence
  • Strengthen credible third-party coverage
  • Make expertise and authorship easy to verify
  • Avoid treating citation growth alone as proof of influence

Loop Digital’s content marketing services combine visibility with credibility, trust and customer decision support.

Google Adds New AI Insights and Reporting to Ads and Analytics

Google is expanding AI across Ads and Analytics reporting. Google Analytics is introducing AI-generated performance summaries, while Google Ads is adding personalised insight cards and natural-language analysis through Ask Advisor.

Marketers will also be able to generate dashboards using text prompts and receive AI-written explanations of performance trends.

The tools could make reporting faster, but they should support – not replace – commercial judgement.

What should your marketing team do?

  • Use AI summaries to identify areas worth investigating
  • Verify unusual trends before changing strategy
  • Compare recommendations with commercial objectives
  • Treat benchmarks as context, not fixed targets
  • Keep human oversight over budget and campaign decisions

A joined-up view across SEO, PPC, websites and conversion sits at the heart of Loop Digital’s wider digital marketing services.

Google Tests Clickable Links Inside Search Ad Descriptions

Google is testing clickable words and phrases within Search ad descriptions. Selected phrases are being turned into hyperlinks that currently lead to the same landing page as the main ad headline.

Google has not confirmed how the links are selected or whether the test will roll out more widely.

If expanded, stronger description copy could become even more important.

What should advertisers do?

No immediate changes are needed.

For now:

  • Keep descriptions clear and specific
  • Make key benefits easy to understand
  • Ensure landing pages support ad claims
  • Monitor CTR if the format appears in your account

This Week in 60 Seconds

  • Microsoft Clarity now separates branded and non-branded AI citations. This provides a clearer view of whether your expertise is appearing beyond existing brand searches.
  • Google Smart Bidding changes arrive on 17 August. Budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns should be reviewed.
  • AI Max auto-upgrades begin from 1 September. Benchmark affected Search campaigns before migration.
  • ChatGPT advertising is becoming more established. Similarweb reports ads appearing in 26% of responses.
  • Google continues to encourage AI Mode usage. New homepage buttons provide direct routes into AI-powered Search features.
  • AI brands are gaining consumer consideration faster than trust. Recognition still needs to be supported by credibility and evidence.
  • Google is adding more AI assistance to Ads and Analytics. Faster reporting should support, not replace, marketing judgement.
  • Clickable Search ad descriptions are being tested. No immediate action is required, but ad-copy quality could become even more important.

27th July 2026 – 2nd August 2026

The previous week centred more heavily on AI visibility, content quality, data governance and upcoming website changes.

AI Citations Are Not Always Translating Into Brand Visibility

An AI platform can use your website as a source without making your brand noticeable within its answer.

A Semrush study of 3,981 domain appearances found that 61.7% were “ghost citations”. The platform linked to the source, but the answer did not name the brand behind it.

Only 13.2% of appearances included both a source citation and a visible brand mention.

The behaviour also differed significantly between platforms. ChatGPT frequently cited pages without naming the organisation, while Gemini was more likely to name a brand without providing a source link.

This matters because citations, mentions and recommendations serve different purposes:

  • A citation shows that your content was used as a source
  • A mention makes your brand visible within the answer
  • A recommendation presents your business as a possible choice
  • A referral brings the user to your website

A business could therefore earn multiple AI citations without gaining meaningful brand recognition or website traffic.

AI Citation Opportunities Vary Significantly by Industry

The likelihood of earning a citation from ChatGPT depends heavily on the sector, the type of question and the sources users trust within that market.

Similarweb data found that ChatGPT cited sources in 22.6% of travel answers, compared with 6.8% across all topics and 4.8% for education.

The types of sources used differed as well. Travel answers relied heavily on reviews and user-generated content, while finance answers used more specialist finance websites and publishers.

The research covered US desktop activity and should not be treated as a universal benchmark. However, it does show why there is no single AI-visibility strategy that will work equally well in every market.

What should your business do?

  • Track AI citations and brand mentions separately
  • Test the questions potential customers ask before choosing a supplier
  • Publish comparison and decision-support content that clearly identifies your business
  • Build credible coverage on relevant third-party websites, directories and communities
  • Check whether AI platforms describe your services accurately

Improve Your Brand’s Visibility Across AI Search

Ranking well in Google does not automatically mean your business appears in ChatGPT, Gemini or AI-generated search results.

Loop Digital’s Answer Engine Optimisation services can help identify:

  • Which customer questions currently surface your competitors
  • Whether AI platforms understand what your business offers
  • Where your website lacks clear, extractable answers
  • Whether your brand is being cited, named or recommended

AI-Generated Content Continues to Rank in Google Search

Google does not appear to reject a page simply because AI helped create it. The quality and purpose of the finished page remain more important.

An Ahrefs analysis covered approximately 150,000 pages appearing in the top ten results for 100,000 searches.

Pages that detectors classified as heavily AI-written appeared at every ranking position, including first place.

However, the study also found a gradual relationship between higher AI scores and weaker results. Pages with less detected AI content accounted for most top-three positions, while heavily AI-flagged pages appeared less frequently within Ahrefs’ indexing data.

This does not prove that Google applies a specific AI-content penalty.

AI detectors do not reliably show who wrote a page, and the research did not control for factors such as:

  • Accuracy
  • Originality
  • Subject expertise
  • Content depth
  • Internal linking
  • Website authority
  • Search intent satisfaction

Hence, AI use is not the main risk. Publishing generic, inaccurate or unedited content is.

AI can support research, planning and first drafts. It should not replace subject knowledge, fact-checking or editorial judgement.

What should your business do?

Before publishing AI-assisted content, check:

  • Does it answer the reader’s real question?
  • Are its factual claims verified?
  • Does it include original experience, evidence or examples?
  • Is the information specific to your business and customers?
  • Does it help someone make a decision?
  • Has a knowledgeable person reviewed it?

Loop Digital’s content marketing services focus on useful, search-led content that supports visibility, trust and conversion rather than content volume alone.

Shared Claude Conversations Highlight AI Data-Privacy Risks

Conversations made accessible through public sharing links can become discoverable through search engines.

The Claude issue did not expose every private conversation. It affected chats that users had deliberately converted into public share links. Some users may have assumed these links worked like private or unlisted documents.

In practice, a publicly accessible webpage can be found, copied or indexed unless the correct technical controls are applied. Several indexed conversations reportedly contained information users probably did not expect to appear in search results.

This creates a wider business-governance concern. Employees increasingly use AI tools for:

  • Code and technical troubleshooting
  • Internal planning
  • Document analysis
  • Recruitment
  • Financial or legal research

A convenient sharing feature can therefore expose more than the conversation itself. It may also reveal uploaded documents, source material or confidential prompts.

What should your business do?

  • Review public AI links created by employees and contractors
  • Revoke access to conversations that no longer need to be shared
  • Do not include passwords, API keys, personal data or confidential client information
  • Treat every public sharing link as a public webpage
  • Add AI sharing and data-handling rules to internal policies

Google Delays DSA Migration to AI Max Until February 2027

Google has delayed the Dynamic Search Ads migration until February 2027, but some related upgrades will still begin in September 2026.

Dynamic Search Ads use a website’s content to match searches with relevant landing pages and generate suitable headlines.

Google is moving this functionality into AI Max for Search campaigns.

The original transition was due to begin in September 2026. Following advertiser feedback, Google extended the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and automatic upgrade timeline to February 2027.

However, campaigns using Automatically Created Assets and the campaign-level broad match setting remain scheduled for automatic upgrades beginning in September 2026. The extension gives advertisers more time to prepare. It should not be treated as a reason to delay migration planning until 2027.

What should advertisers do?

  • Identify campaigns using DSA and other affected legacy settings
  • Record current conversion rates, cost per lead and lead quality
  • Review final URL expansion and search-term controls
  • Check that conversion tracking measures genuine business outcomes
  • Test AI Max alongside controlled existing activity before moving the full budget

WordPress 7.1 Moves Closer to Its August Release

WordPress 7.1 Beta 4 is a testing release and should not be installed on a live or business-critical website.

WordPress released Beta 4 on 29 July. It contains more than 114 updates and fixes since Beta 3, including 51 editor changes and 63 Core changes.

The final WordPress 7.1 release is currently scheduled for 19 August 2026.

The beta gives developers, agencies and website owners time to test compatibility. It is particularly relevant to websites using:

  • Bespoke themes
  • Custom plugins
  • Ecommerce systems
  • Complex forms
  • Membership functionality
  • Third-party integrations

Businesses without custom functionality do not need to take immediate action.

They should, however, confirm that someone is responsible for testing, backups and the eventual stable update.

What should website owners do?

  • Test WordPress 7.1 in a staging or local environment
  • Check forms, payments and important customer journeys
  • Confirm that themes and plugins remain compatible
  • Create a reliable backup before the stable update
  • Avoid updating a live site on release day without a rollback plan

Loop Digital’s managed WordPress hosting and maintenance covers backups, WordPress updates, security monitoring and technical support.

Google Expands AI-Generated Advertising Disclosures

Google is introducing a “How this ad was made” section within My Ad Centre across Search, YouTube and Discover.

When advertisers use Google’s generative AI tools, Google will add the disclosure automatically. Advertisers will also be able to indicate when external generative tools were used to create or alter an advertisement.

Local requirements may result in a label appearing directly on the ad. No immediate campaign change is required for most advertisers, but businesses should start recording how advertising assets are produced.

What should advertisers do?

Document which copy, images and videos were generated or substantially edited with AI.

This will support:

  • Internal approval
  • Client transparency
  • Brand governance
  • Future disclosure requirements
  • Advertising compliance

Identify the Marketing Changes That Require Action

You do not need to respond to every platform test, AI feature or advertising announcement.

The more important question is whether your current marketing has problems these developments could expose or amplify.

Loop Digital’s free digital marketing audit reviews marketing as a connected system rather than treating SEO, PPC and the website as isolated channels. It can help identify missed visibility, wasted spend, conversion problems and the priorities worth addressing first.

Where Your Business Should Act Now

Act now

Review Google Ads campaigns that are Limited by budget and use Target CPA or Target ROAS before the Smart Bidding change on 17 August.

Also review publicly shared AI conversations and remove access where they contain client information, internal documents or commercially sensitive material.

Prepare

Identify Search campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match ahead of the 1 September AI Max upgrades.

Prepare WordPress websites for the stable WordPress 7.1 release, including testing, backups and compatibility checks.

Review

Use Microsoft Clarity’s branded and non-branded AI citation reporting to understand whether your visibility extends beyond people or systems already researching your business by name.

Keep citations, mentions, recommendations, referrals and conversions separate when assessing AI-search performance.

Monitor

Keep an eye on:

  • ChatGPT advertising
  • Google’s AI Mode homepage tests
  • Clickable Search ad descriptions
  • Google’s AI-generated Ads and Analytics insights

These developments are strategically relevant, but they do not all justify immediate changes to your marketing plan.

Stay Ahead of Change and Protect Your Marketing Results

Search, advertising, AI and website platforms are changing quickly. Trying to respond to every update can waste as much time as ignoring all of them.

The real risk is focusing on platform changes while more important marketing problems remain unresolved:

  • Your business is missing from high-value search and AI answers
  • Advertising spend is producing low-quality enquiries
  • Conversion tracking is incomplete
  • Your website attracts traffic but fails to convert it
  • Technical or content issues are reducing visibility and trust

A tailored conversation with us at Loop Digital can help you establish:

  • Which industry changes genuinely affect your business
  • Where visibility or lead-generation opportunities are being missed
  • What requires immediate attention
  • Which two or three improvements are most likely to deliver measurable value

Loop Digital brings together SEO, AEO, GEO, PPC, content, CRO and web development, allowing recommendations to consider the full customer journey rather than one isolated channel.
